چکیده

EVERITT, J.H.; YANG, C.; SRIHARAN, S., and JUDD, F.W., 2009. Using high resolution satellite imagery to map black mangrove on the Texas Gulf Coast. Journal of Coastal Research, 24(6), 1582–1586. West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. QuickBird false color satellite imagery was evaluated for distinguishing black mangrove [Avicennia germinans (L.) L.] populations on the south Texas Gulf Coast. The imagery had three bands (green, red, and near-infrared) and contained 11-bit data. Two subsets of the satellite image were extracted and used as test sites. Supervised and unsupervised image analysis techniques were used to classify the imagery. For the supervised classification of site 1, black mangrove had a producer’s accuracy of 82.1% and a user’s accuracy of 95.8%, whereas for the unsupervised classification, black mangrove had a producer’s accuracy of 100% and a user’s accuracy of 60.9%. In the supervised classification of site 2, black mangrove had a producer’s accuracy of 91.7% and a user’s accuracy of 100%, whereas in the unsupervised classification, black mangrove had a producer’s accuracy of 100% and a user’s accuracy of 85.7%. These results indicate that QuickBird imagery combined with image analysis techniques can be used successfully to distinguish and map black mangrove along the south Texas Gulf Coast. ADDITIONAL INDEX WORDS: Remote sensing, QuickBird satellite imagery, computer image analysis, accuracy assessment, Texas Gulf Coast, Avicennia germinans.

Evaluating AISA Hyperspectral Imager y for Mapping Black Mangr ove along the South Texas Gulf Coast

Mangrove wetlands are economically and ecologically important ecosystems and accurate assessment of these wetlands with remote sensing can assist in their management and conservation. This study was conducted to evaluate airborne AISA hyperspectral imagery and image transformation and classification techniques for mapping black mangrove populations on the south Texas Gulf coast. AISA hyperspect...

Mangrove reemergence in the northernmost range limit of eastern Florida.

Cavanaugh et al. (1) report conclusive evidence of poleward expansion of mangroves at the northern limit of their historic range on the east coast of Florida and associate the expansion to a reduction in the frequency of extreme cold events. We agree with their assertion that mangrove expansion has occurred in eastern Florida, resulting from a lack of extreme freeze perturbations since 1984 (2,...

Biotic interactions mediate the expansion of black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) into salt marshes under climate change.

Many species are expanding their distributions to higher latitudes due to global warming. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these distribution shifts is critical for better understanding the impacts of climate changes. The climate envelope approach is widely used to model and predict species distribution shifts with changing climates. Biotic interactions between species, however, may also...

The Contribution of Mangrove Expansion to Salt Marsh Loss on the Texas Gulf Coast

Landscape-level shifts in plant species distribution and abundance can fundamentally change the ecology of an ecosystem. Such shifts are occurring within mangrove-marsh ecotones, where over the last few decades, relatively mild winters have led to mangrove expansion into areas previously occupied by salt marsh plants. On the Texas (USA) coast of the western Gulf of Mexico, most cases of mangrov...
